FRIEZE (first published #icandyla)
The fourth annual Frieze Los Angeles blew into town - more specifically, Santa Monica`s Barker Hangar - on Thursday Feb 29, housing eclectic art work from over 95 international galleries. Born in London in 2003 out of the 1993 British art magazine of the same name, Frieze LA opened on the Paramount Lot in 1999, instantly becoming the cultural/social event of the season. Thursday night`s excitement had local culture collectors whipped up into an anything-but-chill frenzy, extending their costumes - a word I use to describe these sartorial choices because aesthetics aren`t just an outside job: they start in your gut and work their way out. We spotted lots of walking works of art at Frieze - heating up the big tent into a kind of cultural circus.

THIS PAST SATURDAY: It’s hard to believe I was a Pickwick Vintage virgin till recently. Busting my Pickwick cherry, I’m already an addict. The big baby of Big Daddy vintage king Richard Wainwright is no longer just the domain of thrifters antiquarians or 90’s obsessed kids. I found rare delights from Chanel, Gucci, Ferragamo, McQueen, Celine: bags, glasses, dresses, sweater, etc, goods – all pristine, all priced far lower than expected. Sure, Crossroads has deals – Out of the Closet has steals – but Pickwick is a true vintage lover’s dream, with better goods and better prices for them than I’ve seen anywhere else. I’m going back for jewelry, evening bags, 70’s dresses, patchwork leather jackets -

This past Saturday, January 27th Dynamix MMA held their bi-yearly Jiu Jitsu promotions starting with a one hour Open Mat preceding the ceremonies. Because of the divergent class schedules many of the students were meeting each other for the first time. Overall, there were 29 well deserved promotions. A big thank you to all the coaches who contribute so much to us all. A shout out as well to the Brian Jonestown Massacre for its driving soundtrack. ICandyLA`s criteria, defined by our panel of experts - or expert, I should say - comes down to this:
- PERSONAL STYLE: How unique is someone`s look? How much does it relay about them? Fashion, in our view, should communicate personal visual messages. It`s one of the ways in a big sprawling city to find, identify, your tribe.
- WHAT SUITS AN INDIVIDUAL PHYSICALLY?: We all tend to make clothing choices based on our bodies, ages, features, coloring, our histories - our financials, of course - our determined color schemes. It doesn`t have to flattering, per se - although that factors. It just needs to be - cohesive. A picture, a full story - all these things reflect personal choices.
- IT`S GOT TO BE INTERESTING IN AND OF ITSELF: Outside of how it suits you, what it says about you - does it stand out? Cookie cutter looks are about hiding - which is fine. But having style nerve - fashion balls! - grabs out attention. It makes the world, the city, a much more interesting place. Let`s face it: people watching is a very popular sport.

ICandyLA`s sole mission: documenting sartorially splendid Angelenos out and about, anywhere and everywhere - was fabulously fulfilled this year.
I say: Why not dress like a rock star - or movie star - or, hell, Hulu star - if you can? With the endless array of vintage and second
hand stores found in every port in the 323, 310, 424, 213 and 818, one can put together a couturial costume on a little more than
a quarter. All it takes is time - and a little imagination. It`s not so much about finding that dress or jacket for a particular party - the right dress, the right suit - they ARE the party!! And if you`ve got an extra few thousand lying around - or can score free celeb couture - you`ve got zero excuses: in L.A., there`s a red carpet round every corner. Every night`s an awards show.
So dig in and err on the side of Paris Hilton: "The only rule is: don`t be boring and dress cute wherever you go. Life`s too short to blend in."

If Balenciaga – the French neo-goth-style brand reinvented by Vetements’ Georgian designer, enfant terrible newly-one-named Demna (former Gvasalia) – came to L.A. to send it up – why did they choose the most beatific tree-lined block in Hancock Park to show almost all-black bodycon or volumatic mens and womens’ brutalist style pre-fall clothes, shown with models gabbing on phones, gabbing a deux, hauling yoga mats and thousand dollar Erewhon bags? The evening soiree at Sunset Tower was a more appropriate urban background.

On Saturday night, November 18, L.A. Dance Project performed an evening length work, THE MISSING MOUNTAIN , choreographed by artists-in-residence Bobbi Jene Smith & Or Schraiber. The esteemed choreographer`s fourth work for L.A.D.P.,,t sold out the company`s DTLA warehouse theater in short runs both in September and November. Smith describes the ethereal but expressionist work`s "mountain" "an imaginary place within ourselves," a feeling or sensation conveyed by the six characters/dancers. Smith describes the scenario created as both "domestic and surreal," as dancers performed on carpet to allow for a space more playful and fearless. Are they family? Lovers? Six tightly knit friends? Or were they a dysfunctional family`s Thanksgiving? However one interpreted, it was a sensorial movable feast for the eyes - and imagination.
